In the Budo Ryu Kai we train in various methods of conditioning to prepare the student for any situation that could
happen on the streets. This includes but are not only limited too, sparring, grappling, throwing drills, weapon tactics, impact conditioning, hojo undou, weight training, cardiovascular training, core and flexablity conditioning, skin and bone conditioning, this list goes on and on.
These philosophies of training, condition the student in different aspects within the martial arts. Combat Conditioning
is the term that we use here when training the body physically, to prepare the student for combative methods.
I believe strongly
in conditioning (hojo undou). I think that in today’s world with crime as high as it is, you have to be able to react
on call. To do this you have to train in combative forms and techniques. I know MANY higher-level black belt martial artists
that cannot fight or have any chance of really defending themselves on the streets of today; this is because all they care
about is the stripes on their waist and not the raw reality of being able to physically defend and protect yourself. The 2 common mistakes of today’s martial artist are:
– IMPACT CONDITIONING
This is an easy problem
to fix, just start sparring. This is a way to teach your body how to take a strike and to continue to fight. In the art that
I teach Ninjutsu, there are many people more concerned with black masks and throwing blades than the ability to fight. To
me this does not make any sense, if you are want to be a warrior than train like a warrior. I feel that you need to engage
in physical combative attacks to be able to really know what you are doing. If you never spar and never know what it is like
getting hit, how do you know that you can defend your self?
– CARDIOVASCULAR CONDITIONING
When an argument starts,
you will have to react out of fear, life or death. Your heart rate will raise and your body will then need to start taking
in more oxygen to maintain due to stress. Do you really want to loose your life because your body cannot handle the stress?
To make your cardiovascular
conditioning improve you just have to get out and be more active. Start an exercise program that will help you in these areas.
The first thing to do is to start running three times a week. You do not have to run long, but if you can get out and run
three times a week for 20- 30 min. than you will improve your cardiovascular ability. Do you really want to loose your life
because your body cannot handle the cardiovascular stress of a combative attack that last longer than 3 seconds?
I am not saying that
you have to be a kick boxer or a tournament fighter. I am not saying that you have to spar every day. I am saying that if
you are a practitioner of budo, than spar once a week, once a month. You owe it to yourself.
